DONE DEAL

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

General Manager Warren Rychel has traded Mississauga’s second-round pick in the 2013 draft to the Majors for winger Kerby Rychel.

The deal also sees the teams return the other’s second-round picks in 2015 and 2016 – picks the teams had originally swapped in trades that sent Justin Shugg and Marc Cantin to the Majors, and Nick Ebert to the Spitfires, this past summer.

Kerby, a 16 year-old native of Tecumseh, ON, is Warren’s son. He is listed at 6’1” and 200 pounds.

“We’re very excited to have acquired Kerby. He will be a great addition to the team and has a bright future in our league,” head coach Bob Jones said today. “He’s a well-coached player and has an exceptional understanding of the game.  Kerby knows how to play the game the right way and will bring his skills and knowledge to help our team.”

Rychel was originally the Barrie Colts’ first round pick, 21st overall in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection.

This season, he has two goals and six assists for eight points with 47 penalty minutes and a +5 plus-minus rating in 30 games with the Majors.

Tuesday night, Rychel had a goal and an assist and was selected as Player of the Game in leading Team Ontario to a 5-3 victory over Team USA in the gold medal game of the 2011 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Rychel scored three goals and four assists for seven points at the tournament.

“We are happy to add a quality ’94-born forward to our organization,” Warren Rychel said. “Kerby has excellent work ethic and can become a true power forward with further development.”

Rychel will be suiting up for the Spitfires, wearing #16, in their first game of the new year Thursday at 7:05 p.m against the Plymouth Whalers at the WFCU Centre.
