The Spitfires traveled from Erie to Niagara for the last game of the road trip on Saturday evening. The game got off to a slow start, it took 6 minutes, but the Spitfires struck first courtesy of Will Cuylle, making it 1-0. Niagara responded 8 minutes later with a tally of their own tying the game at 1. Shots were in favour of Niagara 7-5 after one period of play.
The second period was scoreless, teams traded penalties and opportunities, but the goalies remained solid. Shots were in favour of the Ice Dogs 23-12.
In the third period, the Ice Dogs took the lead just 5 minutes and 35 seconds into the frame. Late in the third, the Spitfires were on the powerplay when a shot was directed toward the net, the goalie made the save, and the puck jarred loose, D’Amico put it into the net, but the quick whistle denied the Spitfires from tying the game! A few seconds later, Afanasyev found Purboo back door who wired one home tying the game with just 32 seconds left in the third. Shots were 33-24 after three periods of play.
In the overtime period, both teams had back and forth chances. The Spitfires gave up a breakaway, and the Ice Dogs scored with 1.1 seconds left in OT to win the game. Final score: 3-2
