Spitfires Snap Losing Skid, Win 5-4 (OT) over Sarnia
The Spitfires travelled to Sarnia for a matchup with the Sting, the first game of this home and home series. This was the 4th meeting of six between the two teams, Windsor was 3-0-0 heading into tonight’s game.
In the first period, the Spitfires saw themselves get into some penalty trouble having to kill off a five on three; they did so successfully. Shortly after that, the Spitfires struck for the games first goal. Angle got the puck in the slot and ripped it past the goalie to give the Spitfires the lead halfway into the period. Shots were 18-12 in favour of Sarnia after the first 20 minutes.
In the second period, Sarnia scored just 2:11 into the period to tie the game at one. The period traded a lot of shots with Windsor leading 35-27 after 2 periods.
In the third period, the Sting scored shorthanded to go up 2-1. Medina got injured on the play and Piiroinen relieved him. Soon after that Corcoran scored just after the powerplay expired to make it 2-2. Soon after that, the Spitfires Purboo appeared to score on another powerplay but it was called back after a questionable goalie interference call. But the Spitfires got revenge after and scored on the powerplay to go up 3-2. However, just three minutes later Sarnia tied it at 3 and 30 seconds after that they scored again to make it 4-3 Sting. With just three minutes left in the period, the Spitfires tied the game courtesy of Purboo, this one counted. Sixty minutes solved nothing so we were off to overtime.
In the overtime period, the Sting had a close chance but D’Amico made a great defensive play, the Spitfires headed up ice and Douglas got the puck off a blocked shot and whacked it into the net to give the Spitfires the big win 5-4!
