Former 1st Round pick anxious for ‘fresh start’

General Manager Warren Rychel is pleased to announce the club has claimed Brandon Shea through the CHL Player Transfer Process.

Born June 30, 1995, Shea, 18, is a left-shooting centre from Marshfield, Massachusetts.

Originally Moncton’s first round pick, 13th overall, back in 2011, Shea played a total of 82 games over three seasons with the Wildcats and Quebec Remparts, posting seven goals and 12 assists, with 30 penalty minutes.

Rychel says Shea is an intriguing player with a great deal of hockey ahead of him.

“We’re looking forward to seeing Brandon in Spitfires training camp in late August, where he should challenge for a spot on our hockey club,” Rychel said. “This is an opportunity for a fresh start for a player who has been very highly-touted in the past.”

Shea says he is looking forward to the chance to show what he can do.

“I was excited to hear it,” Shea said about the news he’d been claimed. “I’ve never been to Windsor, but I’ve heard a lot about the two Memorial Cup titles. When Taylor Hall and guys like that played there.”

At 6’2, 210 pounds, Shea says he’s a player that competes with a physical edge.

“I’m a big power forward,” he said. “I like to think of myself as a two-way power forward.”

Shea says he’s ready to put a frustrating recent past behind him.

“When I first went to the Q, I had high expectations for myself,” Shea said. “But you can’t live in the past. I’m looking at this as a new start. All that stuff is behind me now. I have to look ahead. I’ve been training five times a week. With a bunch of pro guys here. Hopefully, I will be in great shape when camp starts. I’m pretty confident I can come in and have an impact. I’m almost 19 now, an older guy in this league.”
