KIRWAN JOINS SPITFIRES
Top prospect adds size & scoring
General Manager Warren Rychel is pleased to announce the club has agreed to terms with Luke Kirwan.
Originally a 2nd Round pick of the Guelph Storm in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection, the Spitfires acquired the rights to the 1997-born native of Syracuse, New York last month, in a deal that saw a pair of 2nd Round selections (2018 and 2019) head the other way.
Kirwan, 16, spent the 2013-14 season with the United States National Under-17 team, putting up 29 goals and 28 assists along with 54 penalty minutes in 54 games.
Representing the United States at last season’s World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, the 6’2, 220-pound left winger was dominant, putting up six goals and seven assists in six games.
Rychel says Kirwan is a major addition.
“Luke is a true, young power forward that adds size and an instant scoring threat to our lineup,” he said. “He’s a player we’ve coveted since he was drafted back in 2013. He’s a dedicated young man who is interested in learning and getting better. I think our fans will appreciate his game and he’ll a huge contributor to the Windsor Spitfires.”
Considered a top propsect for the 2016 NHL Draft, Kirwan says coming to Windsor is a perfect fit for him.
“I’m ecstatic about being a member of the Spitfires,” Kirwan told WindsorSpitfires.com. “I came to a game a couple of years ago. And I loved it. The fans, the atmosphere. When it came right down to it, I just wanted to be a part of it.”
Kirwan will be at our 2014 Training Camp, which opens August 25th at the WFCU Centre.
