Russian-born LW combines size & skill

General Manager Warren Rychel is pleased to announce 1998-born Daniil Vertiy has agreed to terms on a standard player agreement and education package with the Windsor Spitfires organization.

Selected in the 2nd Round (26th overall) in April’s 2014 OHL Priority Selection, Vertiy is a 6’0, 198-pound left winger that played for the North York Rangers Minor Midget AAA squad of the GTMMHL in 2013-14. Vertiy averaged just shy of a point per game, with 15 goals and 13 assists, along with 29 penalty minutes, in 29 games played.

He added a goal in five playoff games and had three more in four games at the OHL Cup in March.

Rychel says fans will enjoy watching Vertiy play on a nightly basis.

“Daniil is an outstanding young player with good size and strength,” Rychel said. “He’s got very good hockey sense and a quick release. We set out to add skill and scoring to our lineup in this draft and Daniil certainly adds just that. We think he will mesh very nicely with our core of young forwards.”

Reached in his native Russia, Vertiy says he’s thrilled to continue his hockey journey with the Spitfires.

“I’m really excited that I have the opportunity to join the Windsor Spitfires,” Vertiy offered. “When I came to Toronto in September, I couldn’t imagine it. But I have worked hard all year. It wasn’t easy. I’ve learned a lot and noticed that hockey in Canada is quite different than in Russia. I like that I’m learning something new, improving my skills. So I hope in Windsor I will continue to do this. I have heard a lot about the Windsor Spitfires, watched playoff games online. And now I’m a part of it! That’s so cool. I’m sure I will love being in Windsor. Also I like the team’s staff. They are very careful and kind. So I just need to work as hard as I can to be impactful at the next level. I am looking forward to playing for the Windsor Spitfires. And I will try to do my very best. My dreams have come true!”
