The Windsor Spitfires and Education
The Windsor Spitfires' ownership team of Bob Boughner, Warren Rychel and Peter Dobrich recognize the importance of education for each of their players. Every Spitfire player attends school at some level, whether it is High School at St. Anne's, St. Michael's Co-operative Education program as well as college at St. Clair, or at the University of Windsor. All tuition and books are covered by the team. 95% of all OHL players attend high school, college, or university. When players end their OHL careers, they are entitled to a post-secondary scholarship. *Every OHL player receives a scholarship upon signing a contract. (Conditions & scholarship amounts may differ between players). Many of our alumni are currently taking advantage of these funds while attending universities and colleges across the country. As an added bonus, some players are even receiving additional scholarships from their respective schools while they are playing hockey in the C.I.S.

The University of Windsor has recently formed an alliance with the Windsor Spitfires. Both are currently developing initiatives to expand their roles in the community. The University has stepped up in offering assistance in enrollment procedures and student success strategies for current Windsor Spitfires. The Lancers are also providing great opportunities for O.H.L. grads to continue their hockey careers while pursuing their academic goals.
Being in the OHL West division, with predominant weekend road games, permits the players to attend school regularly. With a 68 game unbalanced regular season schedule, and a two-conference, four-division format the Ontario Hockey League has taken steps to minimize the number of school days missed and maximize the opportunity for the student athlete.
The Windsor Spitfires have 2 Academic Advisors who assist the players in any educational questions, and provide guidance in their studies. Mr. Dennis Gignac at the new, "state of the art", St. Anne's High School and Mr. John Laporte not only provide guidance for the secondary students, but also work cooperatively with St. Clair College and the University of Windsor to assist the post-secondary students with their educational needs. If you have been drafted or acquired by the Spits and have any questions regarding Education as a member of the Windsor Spitfires, you can contact Mr. Gignac at (519) 727-8908 or Mr. Laporte at (519) 567-2487.
