(Windsor, ON) – The Spitfires and Frontenacs have completed a blockbuster trade that sees forward Gabriel Vilardi and defenceman Sean Day headed to Kingston.
In return, the Spitfires get highly-touted, 2017 first-round pick Cody Morgan and five draft picks: Mississauga’s 2nd in 2020, Kingston’s 2nd rounders in 2022, 2024 and 2025 and Kingston’s 3rd in 2020, along with Kingston’s 3rd in 2023 (conditional).
It’s a chance for Vilardi, a Kingston native, to return to his hometown for what could be his final season of junior hockey.
“I know Gabe is happy about that,” General Manager Warren Rychel said. “But that didn’t make this any easier. Gabe and Daysy were a huge part of a special team. It’s obviously hard to see them go. But they both understand why we had to make the deal and they’re excited to have another chance to make another run at a title. ”
Rychel says taking the opportunity to acquire a high-end talent like Morgan and much-needed high picks was the right thing to do for the organization.
“Cody is going to be a very good player in our league and we really needed to restock some of the picks we spent last year to go for it.”
Rychel says there was plenty of interest in both Vilardi and Day.
“The Eastern Conference is wide open and a few teams, like Kingston, are going for it. What these two guys bring to the table is rare: high-end skill and the experience that comes with winning.”
A Richmond Hill native, Morgan, 16, is a 5’11 and 187-pound centre that played in the Toronto Junior Canadiens AAA program before being chosen #12 overall by the Frontenacs back in April. He will arrive in Windsor on Tuesday and will make the Eastern Ontario trip this week that includes a return to Kingston, along with stops in Peterborough and Ottawa.
